Description

These Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs combine the best of two classic comfort foods into one delicious, easy-to-make sandwich. Crispy buttery bread encases melty cheese and juicy hot dogs, all perfectly cooked in the air fryer for a quick snack or meal with minimal cleanup and maximum flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Hot Dogs

  • 4 hot dog sausages
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs like oregano or basil (optional)

Bread and Cheese

  • 4 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
  • 4 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, or your favorite melting cheese)

Other

  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • Cooking spray for air fryer basket

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hot Dogs: Remove the hot dogs from packaging and ensure they are fully thawed if previously frozen. Make several shallow diagonal slashes on each hot dog to promote even cooking and better flavor penetration.
  2. Season Hot Dogs (Optional): Sprinkle garlic powder and dried herbs over the hot dogs to add extra flavor, if desired.
  3. Prepare the Bread: Lay out the slices of bread on a clean surface. Spread softened butter generously on one side of each slice to ensure a golden, crispy crust when cooked.
  4. Assemble Sandwiches: On the unbuttered side of two slices, place a slice of cheese covering the bread well. Top each with a prepared hot dog, and optionally add another slice of cheese on top of the hot dog for extra cheesiness. Cover with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
  5. Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). This usually takes about 3-5 minutes depending on the model.
  6. Prepare Air Fryer Basket: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking before placing the sandwiches inside.
  7. Air Fry the Sandwiches: Place sandwiches in the basket without overcrowding. Cook for 5 minutes, then carefully flip each sandwich using tongs or a spatula.
  8. Finish Cooking: Cook for an additional 3-5 minutes until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has fully melted. Monitor closely to avoid burning.
  9. Cool and Slice: Remove the sandwiches carefully and allow them to cool for a minute. Then cut each sandwich diagonally with a sharp knife for easier eating and a pleasing presentation.
  10. Garnish and Serve: Optionally sprinkle additional herbs or add a dash of hot sauce. Serve your Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs with favorite dipping sauces like ketchup, mustard, or spicy aioli.

Notes

  • Make sure hot dogs are thawed completely if frozen before cooking to ensure even heat distribution.
  • Adding extra cheese on top of the hot dog creates a melty, gooey center.
  • Butter the bread generously for the best crispy and golden texture.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket to allow proper air circulation and even cooking.
  • Use tongs or a spatula to flip sandwiches carefully to keep them intact.
  • Variations: substitute cheeses or breads based on preference.
