Description

These Amish Onion Fritters are a delightful combination of sweet onions, savory flavors, and a crispy texture. Perfect as a side dish or appetizer, these fritters are easy to make and even easier to enjoy.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Additional:

  • 2 1/2 cups finely chopped sweet onions (like Vidalia)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  3. Add Onions: Fold in the chopped onions until evenly distributed.
  4. Fry: Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat. Drop the batter by heaping tablespoons into the hot oil, flattening slightly. Fry 2–3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crisp.
  5. Serve: Remove fritters with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels, and serve warm.

Notes

  • These fritters pair well with ranch dressing or spicy aioli.
  • Keep warm in a 200°F oven if cooking in batches.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding smoked paprika or garlic powder to the batter.
