Ingredients
Scale
Onion Mixture
- 2 large onions, sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
Pastry & Topping
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 1 cup grated cheese (such as Gruyère or cheddar)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and allow it to fully heat while you prepare the ingredients.
- Caramelize the onions: In a skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook slowly until they become soft and develop a rich, golden caramel color. This process should take about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
- Prepare the puff pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Using a round cutter or a glass, cut the dough into small circles suitable for tartlets.
- Assemble the tartlets: Place the puff pastry circles onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat. On each circle, spoon a generous amount of the caramelized onions and sprinkle with the grated cheese.
- Bake the tartlets: Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is puffed up and golden brown, and the cheese is melted and slightly bubbly.
- Garnish and serve: Remove the tartlets from the oven and immediately sprinkle fresh thyme leaves on top for a fragrant and flavorful finish. Serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute Gruyère with cheddar or any other melting cheese you prefer.
- Ensure the onions are caramelized slowly on medium heat to develop deep flavor without burning.
- These tartlets can be prepared ahead by making the caramelized onions in advance; just reheat slightly before assembling and baking.
- For a dairy-free version, omit the cheese or use a non-dairy cheese alternative.
- Use fresh thyme for best flavor; dried thyme could be less vibrant.
