Description

A Classic Patty Melt featuring juicy ground beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese sandwiched between slices of rye bread, grilled to golden perfection. This hearty and satisfying sandwich makes a perfect comfort food meal for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patty and Onions

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter (for onions)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for onions)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Sandwiches

  • 8 slices of rye bread (or your choice of bread)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese (or American cheese)
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 4 tbsp butter (for bread)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Heat the olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Cook the beef patties: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then form into four equal patties. Using the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat until they are fully cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread. On four slices, layer one slice of Swiss cheese, the cooked beef patty, and a generous amount of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of Swiss cheese, then cover with the remaining bread slices, mayonnaise side down.
  4. Grill the sandwiches: Butter the outside of each sandwich with the remaining butter. Heat the skillet over medium heat and grill the sandwiches until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling.
  5. Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces, fries, or pickles.

Notes

  • Use rye bread for the classic flavor, but any sturdy bread will work.
  • For extra flavor, you can add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the beef while forming patties.
  • Make sure to cook the onions slowly to develop deep caramelization without burning.
  • Butter the bread generously to achieve a crispy, golden crust.
  • These sandwiches are best served immediately while the cheese is melty and the bread is crisp.
