Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) black beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup finely chopped red onion
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg (or flax egg for vegan)

Additional:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
  • burger buns and desired toppings (lettuce, tomato, avocado, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Mash the Beans: Place the black beans in a large bowl and mash with a fork or potato masher.
  2. Mix Ingredients: Add breadcrumbs, red onion, cilantro, garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, black pepper, and the egg. Mix well until fully combined and sticky.
  3. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4–5 equal-sized patties.
  4. Cook Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  5. Serve: Serve on toasted burger buns with desired toppings.

Notes

  • To make vegan, replace the egg with a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water).
  • For a spicier kick, add diced jalapeños.
  • Patties can be frozen before or after cooking.
