- 2 cans (15 ounces each) black beans (drained and rinsed)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- ½ cup finely chopped red onion
- ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 egg (or flax egg for vegan)
Additional:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions
- Mash the Beans: Place the black beans in a large bowl and mash with a fork or potato masher.
- Mix Ingredients: Add breadcrumbs, red onion, cilantro, garlic, soy sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, black pepper, and the egg. Mix well until fully combined and sticky.
- Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4–5 equal-sized patties.
- Cook Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
- Serve: Serve on toasted burger buns with desired toppings.
Notes
- To make vegan, replace the egg with a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water).
- For a spicier kick, add diced jalapeños.
