Description

This French Onion Croissant Burger offers a savory twist on a classic favorite by combining caramelized onions, melted Gruyère cheese, and juicy beef patties served on buttery toasted croissants. Perfect for an indulgent gourmet burger experience with rich French-American flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Other Ingredients

  • 4 croissants, halved horizontally
  • 4 slices Gruyère cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Fresh thyme leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Cook slowly, stirring often, for 20–25 minutes until onions turn a golden brown and are fully caramelized.
  2. Prepare the Patties: While the onions cook, divide the ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook the Patties: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side or until desired doneness is reached. In the last minute, place a slice of Gruyère cheese on each patty and cover to melt the cheese.
  4. Toast the Croissants: Lightly toast the cut sides of the croissants until crisp and golden.
  5. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well.
  6. Assemble the Burgers: Spread the sauce on the bottom halves of the croissants. Top each with a cheesy beef patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and fresh thyme leaves if using. Cover with the top croissant halves and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra richness, spread a thin layer of garlic butter on the croissants before toasting.
  • Swiss cheese can be used as a substitute if Gruyère is unavailable.
  • Caramelized onions can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 4 days for convenience.
