Description

This Garlic Mushroom Grilled Cheese recipe features sautéed garlic and mushrooms layered with melty cheese between buttery toasted bread slices. Ready in just 20 minutes, it’s a savory and comforting sandwich perfect for a quick lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Mushroom Sauté

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Sandwiches

  • 4 slices bread
  • 4 slices cheese (such as cheddar or Swiss)
  • Additional butter, for grilling

Instructions

  1. Sauté Garlic: In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  2. Cook Mushrooms: Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet with the garlic. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the mushrooms become tender and golden brown. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare Bread: Heat a separate skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each bread slice to ensure golden crispiness.
  4. Assemble Sandwiches: Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on the heated skillet. Layer each with a slice of cheese, then evenly divide the cooked mushrooms on top of the cheese.
  5. Top and Grill: Place the remaining slices of bread on top of the mushrooms with the buttered side facing up.
  6. Cook Until Golden: Grill the sandwiches for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until the bread is a beautiful golden brown and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
  7. Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and allow them to cool for a minute before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use your preferred type of cheese; cheddar and Swiss both melt well and taste great.
  • For extra richness, you can add a little grated Parmesan to the mushroom mixture.
  • Substitute the bread with gluten-free varieties if you require a gluten-free meal.
  • Make sure the skillet is at medium heat to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts.
  • Add fresh herbs like thyme or parsley to the mushroom mix for an enhanced flavor profile.
