Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet dry active yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Topping
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon dried basil
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water and sugar, stirring in the dry active yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Make Dough: Add olive oil, all-purpose flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead by hand on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- Prepare for Baking: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the risen dough to release air bubbles and shape it into a loaf. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet.
- Add Topping: In a small bowl, combine minced garlic, grated parmesan cheese, dried oregano, and dried basil. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the loaf.
- Bake the Bread: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread turns golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped. Let it cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing to serve.
Notes
- Warm water should be between 100°F to 110°F to effectively activate the yeast without killing it.
- For extra flavor, brush the loaf with melted butter right after baking while it’s still warm.
- You can add fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme for variation.
- Store leftover bread wrapped in foil or an airtight container to keep it fresh for up to 3 days.
- Reheat slices in a toaster or oven for a crispy texture.
