Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

For Frying:

  • Oil for frying

For Honey Butter:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

  1. Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, honey, melted butter, and egg until combined. Pour wet ingredients into dry and stir until just mixed. Fold in shredded cheese if using.
  3. Frying: Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350°F. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of batter and fry in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  4. Honey Butter: In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon honey for the dipping sauce. Serve poppers warm with honey butter.

Notes

  • For spicier poppers, add a pinch of cayenne or chopped jalapeños to the batter.
  • Best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a crispy texture.
